Hello,
i've been having an issue where my laptop powers off randomly when
not connected to power. This has been happening since stable and
currently i'm on unstable. I would like to use my laptop without
power.
Joe,

Your issue seems to be experienced by other Aspire E5-575 users.

I believe this to be a hardware fault, not something that Debian can assist you with. Maybe others who post here, have an idea that could help?

The Acer Aspire E5-575-77CR is a powerful laptop with the latest Windows 11 operating system. It packs a 7th generation Intel Core i7-7500U processor, providing up to 3.50 GHz of speed.
Model Aspire 5 (2019)
Release date April 2019

3. Whenever unplugged my laptop doesn’t stay on, switches off right away!

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G Shuts Down When Unplugged
My laptop that is 1.5 years old instantly shuts down the moment it is unplugged.
I've tried using the reset battery button at the back as well as other variations of that fix to no avail.
My battery also says "98% available, (plugged in, charging)" but it doesn't decrease or increase from that 98%.

https://www.quora.com/I-have-an-Acer-E5-574-laptop-Its-battery-always-shows-100-charged-but-as-soon-as-I-unplugged-the-charger-it-got-turned-off-What-is-the-issue-with-the-battery-What-should-I-do
I have an Acer E5-574 laptop. Its battery always shows 100% charged, but as soon as I unplugged the charger it got turned off. What is the issue with the battery? What should I do?

https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/715997/Why+does+my+laptop+suddenly+shuts+down+with+no+signs+of+life?srsltid=AfmBOopv9IHYAnotNCj5CDyq03YEVaSQliLnhTRw_g-CkgUxI97vUUTV
My Acer Aspire E5-575G stopped charging up to 100%. It usually stops charging around 93-96%. When unplugged, it suddenly goes off at around 54 - 57% and will not turn on no matter what I do. When it suddenly goes of, it doesn't indicate signs of life/power when I plug it in to charge. (That is, the orange light won't turn on to indicate charging)

I've tried resetting the battery several times and it still won't switch on, I even went as far as opening up the pc to disconnect and reconnect the built-in battery, but it still won't turn on.

Wow,

Thanks i thought it was debian specific.

For now i will keep it on the charger and use it as a desktop. I used
it for sid but now my main laptop is on sid and everything is working
fine.

Thanks again.

Hello,
i've been having an issue where my laptop powers off randomly when
not connected to power.

I've tried resetting the battery several times and it still won't switch on, I even went as far as opening up the pc to disconnect and reconnect the built-in battery, but it still won't turn on.

i've been having an issue where my laptop powers off randomly when
not connected to power. This has been happening since stable and
currently i'm on unstable. I would like to use my laptop without
power.
It is unclear what actually happens, so it may vary from hardware
failure to intended behavior (shutdown after some timeout if battery
level is too low). Did it happen before bookworm (current stable)? Is it
proper shutdown or abrupt termination? Inspect last messages of

journalctl -b -1

executed as root.

You have not provided any details concerning battery state

upower --dump

or something like

grep '' /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/*

Compare "design" values with full/max ones.

Check temperature! If it shuts down due to overheating, check /var/log/syslog
or /var/log/kern.log. There should be an entry for it.

There are also tools, which check sensors and show its actual state. Look for
gkrellm or others.

Most problems with notebooks, is the air release ist often full of dust.
Relating to the processor use, it may overheat or not.

Check the air flow is good.

Hope this helps.

Best

While a heat problem might still be possible, it's quite improbable since the
OP said that it only happens when runing on battery.

Probably not but not definitely not. There will be some difference in
power circuitry in use between mains and battery, and it is possible for
the mains path circuitry to run cooler than that in the battery path,
maybe better sited for airflow. It is even possible for the circulating
air to get slightly hotter on battery and trigger a thermal intermittent
somewhere else entirely.

If the problem is hardware, cleaning out dust and reseating plugs and
sockets are going to be the easiest things to try first. Not trivial,
laptops don't come apart easily, but actual component failure is going
to be very difficult to diagnose and maybe impossible to fix. I once
saw a desktop motherboard where a memory stick had been badly seated
and blown a power switch IC. It could be seen to be damaged. It was
impossible to obtain this part in Europe.

Certainly, heat is a suspect here, and monitoring whatever temperature
sensors exist seems like a good first approach. Nearly forgot, reseat
the battery first of all, there may be a slightly poor connection there.

Yup. I have three laptops over there that I was given, waiting for me to do something with them. I'm in no particular hurry.

The last laptop I used, left it plugged in all the time and eventually the battery deteriorated, something went wrong and it wouldn't charge up any more. After that I ended up with a "system board error" at which point I gave up on it. I did get 6-7 years of use out of it, amyhow...

So do you recommend me not keep it plugged in all the time and see if the issue resolved it self or with your guys help troubleshooting?

Thanks

Not now. That's good advice from new, pretty much all rechargeable
battery types lose a little capacity every time they are charged right
up to the limit, less so if charged less. A continuously-charged
lithium battery might typically last three to five years, which is not a
problem if you buy a new laptop every year, but most of us don't.

If you have the discipline, or a configuration option as a few lithium
battery devices have, it's optimal to recharge when the charge level is
down to around 50% and to charge to no more than 90%. This will
maximise the life of nearly all types of battery, including lead-acid.

Some people operate almost entirely away from the mains, and need every
possible second of battery life, but most people use laptops indoors,
and indeed, keep them plugged in all the time.

It's not that replacement batteries are enormously expensive, it's more
a matter that you never know how good the replacements are, even if
they are 'genuine manufacturer's original', and one that's specific to a
particular laptop series may become unobtainable too quickly. And a
general dislike of waste, of course.

I really like this idea. Letting it die to 50% then charging it to 90%
if this helps i will keep doing it and if my original issue doesn't
come back then i can mark this thread as resolved.

Thank for the feedback

Thanks for the reply.

I will take the power cable off probably tomorrow or later on tonight.
When it happens i will run those commands and will report back to this
list

You can run that commands while AC power adapter is connected. It should
allow to estimate if battery is still healthy.

For "journalctl -b -1" try different numbers (-2, -3, etc.) to find a
boot log when the issue happened.

So the battery has degraded a bit but capacity is still high enough. I
hope it is reported correctly. There is no apparent sign of failure.

You may compare voltage to value when AC adapter is disconnected.

Another data point is charge level after failure and following boot with
the AC adapter connected.

You sent first message at Fri, 23 Aug 2024 15:11:36 -0700. Perhaps it
was soon after failure. You may try to guess comparing time of first and
last messages.

As to temperature, you may try "sensors" from the lm-sensors package.
For hard drives "smartclt -x" may give even some history.

My impression is that some ACPI errors are not rare. I have no idea
concerning severity of this one.

My question was if the laptop performs proper shutdown on battery.
Perhaps a reason of shutdown is logged before.

I did this all while the battery was unplugged and i hope it can shed
light on something
Voltage and current on battery is more interesting.

If the battery is detachable, are its contacts clean (no dust, deposit)?
A guess is that "ranodm" power off may happen when you hold the laptop
in some specific way and case bending causes bad contact.

I've heard that Intel has instability issue for some of his processors:

Could you verify with:

~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo

that you don't have such a processor?

Cheers

It would be helpful if you describe specific of this boot.

If it is complete log then it looks like abrupt lost of power after 20
min of working on battery. It may be battery failure of bad contact.

Were you monitoring battery charge level during this boot?

What was battery charge level immediately after next boot (assuming that
the AC adapter was connected just before booting)?

Is the laptop able to boot without connecting of AC adapter after
similar events? What is charge level and how long the laptop may run
till next failure?
