Hello,

IF i see a thread i want to jump into to help out how can i be part of
the conversation? as of right now i'm just putting the debian-user
list email and the RE with the subject and replying that way.

I noticed on the list there is a message id. is it possible to copy
the message id to the email so the chain just keeps going ?

Thanks

If your MUA doesn't have an explicit "reply to list" feature, then just
use "reply all", and remove everything except the list address from
the headers.

If you don't do a reply, then the In-Reply-To header which places your
message into the thread won't be set up, and your message will just
be a new thread with the same Subject as an existing one. Some of the
archives may be clever enough to attempt thread joins via Subject header +
Date as well as the normal In-Reply-To header, but some may not.

If for some reason you ever NEED to construct a reply manually, what
you're doing is a good start. You just need to copy the Message-Id
from the message to which you're replying, and add an In-Reply-To header:

In-Reply-To: <messageid>

The <angle> <brackets> are literal here; you should add them.

In my email client (Thunderbird) there is a "Reply list" command, which sets
up the message-ID behind the scenes. Yours may have a similar command. I'm
not sure how one would do it manually. Getting it slightly wrong would
result in a broken thread at best, and possibly an unparsaeble message.

i guess, it depends on your MUA.
I'm Using Android,

I'm mobile a lot so I need something for when I'm out and about. The
closest client i have to plain text, is
K-9 mail. It's no big deal because why would I be posting when I'm out
and about right ?

Thanks
reply, reply to all, reply to list (which is the one, you were looking
for)...

Hello,
HiJoe and welcome, this is a fine question.

Honestly, and speaking personally, like many conversations, it depends on
how you are joining in as it were.

for example, I read all the list posts in my inbox. therefore, for this
message, I chose reply, put something at the start so you knew what I was
doing, and placed my answer under yours. Much as if we were actually
engaged in a conversation. does that resonate?

I personally cannot speak to that idea. I read using my email client,
pine for me, and place that in context. Speaking personally, keeping the
subject line clear is helpful. That also means changing that subject line
if you are really starting a new idea so to speak.
If you are reading somewhere else, perhaps others reading in the same
fashion will offer ideas.
Hope this gives you a helpful way to share your perspective though!

Best,

Karen

If you are using gmail web UI and replying to a message from a mailbox
then it should work, just use a proper button so send response to the
mailing list, not a personal mail.

If you are using gmail web UI and trying to jump into a thread from an
archive page, e.g.
<https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/CAEctfJLqBi-dn21cjcxH=tXf8EBwg9x+QYEjR=***@mail.gmail.com>
then "reply to list" links would not work. Gmail ignores In-Reply-To
query parameter of the link. Most of desktop mail clients should respect it.

Perhaps https://groups.google.com/g/linux.debian.user is a better
alternative for web UI, but I have not tried it.

When replying from inbox, Gmail resets In-Reply-To and References
threading headers when users edit subject field.

My impression is that it is impossible in gmail web UI.

Be careful with setting In-Reply-To and References from Thunderbird.
There is a bug in the 115 ESR version. If you desperately need it then
save a draft message to a file, edit the file, open edited file from
Thunderbird.

I gave up and now using K-9 mail and it seems to be working fine.

Thanks for all the help

It is working fine. In-reply-to header is set. Thanks for caring!

Cheers

I use Thunderbird and IMAP for gmail. Perhaps I stressed too much on
various issues. Threading works properly almost always.

There is a number of annoying bugs in Thunderbird, but I expect to face
more inconveniences in other mailers.

For the record, K-9 Mail has been adopted by the Thunderbird project and
will, in the next major release, be rebranded as Thunderbird.
